Why are heat pumps such a large opportunity for multifamily buildings?
Because a multifamily building typically runs two separate systems — a central boiler for heat and window or PTAC units for cooling — and a heat pump retrofit replaces both with one high-efficiency system, which produces a very large modeled saving.
Incentive value follows modeled energy savings. Collapsing two inefficient systems into one efficient one produces a bigger delta than upgrading either in isolation, which is why heat pump conversions consistently attract the highest incentive tiers.
There is a second benefit that matters to owners and shows up in leasing: residents get per-unit control over both heating and cooling, which older central systems could never offer.
Do heat pumps hold up in a New Jersey winter?
Yes. New Jersey's winter design temperature sits in the low teens Fahrenheit, and current cold-climate equipment is rated to deliver useful capacity well below that.
The reputation heat pumps carry for weak heat in cold weather was earned by single-stage equipment installed decades ago. Variable-capacity inverter equipment modulates instead of cycling, and holds rated output far further down the temperature scale.
